Houdini, Unreal, HDA, Python, Lookdev
For this commercial, I worked as Technical Artist and Lookdev, building a fully procedural hotel room in Houdini that would integrate into Unreal Engine for live virtual production filming.
The whole environment was packaged into an HDA (Houdini Digital Asset), which gave the director complete control during the shoot. Everything – geometry, materials, lighting – could be adjusted in real time, right there on set. This meant they could make creative changes instantly without stopping production.
This was my first real deep dive into Unreal Engine, and the technical challenge was pretty exciting: making Houdini’s procedural workflows run smoothly in real time. Bridging these two tools opened up some cool possibilities for dynamic filmmaking where the virtual set could evolve alongside the creative vision.
